The mission of the Billtown Blues Association is to perpetuate and preserve blues music as a valued indigenous American art form; to assume a community leadership role in promoting the arts; to produce quality and inspiring live music events; to offer educational opportunities targeting the history of blues and the artistic impact of blues music world-wide, and to encourage and support area musicians with a devoted interest in American Roots Music.
The Billtown Blues Association, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1990. We held our first Billtown Blues Festival in June of that year. In 1993 we added the Billtown Blues Challenge, a competition for local and regional musicians to determine the opening act of the Billtown Blues Festival. In 1997 the Billtown Blues Association joined the Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN. In 1997 we sent our first winners of the Billtown Blues Challenge to the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. In 2011 our organization was awarded the Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award for Best Blues Organization. We also sponsor the guest artist for the Uptown Music Collective’s yearly fundraiser, the 24 hour Blues-A-Thon, and are an affiliated member of the Lycoming County Arts Alliance.
The Billtown Blues Association, Inc. is supported in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Council On the Arts for our efforts to perpetuate America’s indigenous music, the blues, in rural Pennsylvania, and grants from the Lycoming County Visitors Bureau and the City of Williamsport.
