Stroll down “Millionaire’s Row” to tour the 19th Century mansions of Williamsport’s Lumber Barons.
Williamsport is known to most as the home of Little League Baseball, its headquarters, and site of the annual world championship. The history of Little League Museum is proudly displayed in its museum, and the field where the World Championship began.
There is another Williamsport that most visitors don’t know, one originating with the lumber industry boom that created Millionaire’s Row, a string of about twenty mid-19th century mansions on West Fourth Street. The lumber millionaires also helped pave the way for the early adoption of an electric streetcar system in 1891 (one year before the same occurrence in Philadelphia).
Today, Historic Trolley Tours showcase Williamsport’s heritage. No visit to Historic Williamsport is complete wthout a stop at the Lycoming County Historical Society’s Thomas T. Taber Museum, which features the outstanding Shempp collection of model trains.

A walk west along West 4th Street will quickly take you from Williamsport’s business center to Millionaire’s Row. At one time Williamsport had more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the country. As a result of the time when 19th century Williamsport was the “lumber capital of the world”, mansions along the row displayed architectural styles ranging from Italian Villa to Queen Anne to Gothic Revival. This is a historic tour you don’t want to miss on your next visit to Williamsport.

Experience Lycoming County’s rich history from its early Native American roots to the Lumber Barons with there wealth and opulence. Visit the different period rooms like the Frontier Room, Victorian Parlor or an authentic Woodworking Shop. The Museum also boasts one on the greatest train collections in the United States. The LaRue Shempp Model Train exhibit contains over 300 toy trains and two working displays! A must see when visiting the museum is its Art Gallery, showcasing five paintings by Severin Roesen, a 19th century still life painter.
